For those wishing to do a fun eco-tourism activity in western Belize, the 45-acre Belize Botanic Gardens — located near San Ignacio, Cayo — is a great way to experience the best of Belize’s flora and fauna. Various Orchids, including Black Orchids, which is the national flower of Belize, are ubiquitous here.

Belize Botanic Gardens tour

A guided tour of BBG is the best way to see the gardens, however, there is the option of doing a self-guided tour. Additionally, horticulture classes are offered to locals and visitors. Some of the highlights include:

  • A Maya House
  • A Watch Tower overlooking the Gardens
  • Trails featuring conservation projects
  • Trails that showcase some of the different ecosystems of Belize
  • Rainforest and Savannah Trails
  • A Maya Medicine Trail
  • A Palm tree area which features over 100 palm species
  • A Native Orchid House
  • Approx. 300 species of birds live in the surrounding area

Since the gardens are located near the jungle lodges of Sweet Songs and Chaa Creek, you can enjoy lunch there and access the Macal River for a refreshing swim before or after your meal.

Insider tip:

I recommend you do a tour of the gardens in the morning, have lunch, and then canoe to San Ignacio. Or canoe from downtown San Ignacio to Sweet Songs. Canoes or kayaks can be rented at the lodge.
