For those wishing to do a fun ecotourism activity in Western Belize, the 45-acre Belize Botanic Gardens — located near San Ignacio, Cayo — is a great way to experience the best of Belize’s flora and fauna. Some of the highlights include:
  • A Maya House
  • A Watch Tower overlooking the Gardens
  • Trails featuring conservation projects
  • Trails that showcase some of the different ecosystems of Belize
  • Rainforest and Savannah Trails
  • A Maya Medicine Trail
  • A Palm tree area which features over 100 palm species
  • A Native Orchid House
  • Approx. 300 species of birds live in the surrounding area
The Belize Botanic Gardens is located adjacent to duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge where you can enjoy a meal and access to the Macal River for a refreshing swim after your lunch. A guided tour is the best way to see the gardens, however, there is the option doing a self-guided tour. Additionally, horticulture classes are offered to locals and visitors.

Insider tip:

I recommend you do a tour of the gardens in the morning, have lunch, and then canoe to San Ignacio. Or canoe from downtown San Ignacio to duPlooys. Canoes or kayaks can be rented at duPlooys.
