Southern Belize’s Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve has been drawing scuba divers for many years, with no guarantee, but merely a chance that they might dive alongside Whale Sharks, the largest cartilaginous fish in the world. Like many giants, their massive form is accompanied by gentle nature.

Whale Shark Diving at Gladden Spit & Silk Cayes

Yes, dive operators off the coast of Placencia and Hopkins in Southern Belize have access to one of the most amazing experiences in the world. Every year, for 10 days after the full moon, during the months of March, April, May, and June, snappers spawn near Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes, attracting numerous Whale Sharks to dine on clouds of caviar.

Having been in the water with them once, I can attest to it being one of the most spectacular experiences underwater. However, I have not been to Gladden Spit myself but when I visit Placencia in the near future, I hope to go diving there. And with some luck, I might be one of the fortunate ones to leave with unforgettable recollections and amazing photos of Whale Sharks.

What are the chances of seeing whale sharks if you go on a dive like this? Is it low like 20% or is there a pretty decent chance you'll see them if you go?
