In the video below, taken at Caracol by my friend Julie Schwietert Collazo, prominent Belizean archaeologist Dr. Jaime Awe explains the fundamentals of Maya Architecture–what makes it distinct and impressive. He draws examples from other countries such as Canada and the US, and how architecture is used to make visual statements that demonstrate national identity, ideology, and cultural symbols.
I find the recording intriguing because Dr. Jaime Awe has a way of making complex information simple. In university, I took courses such as Cultural Anthropology and Mesoamerican Civilization with him and I vividly remember how my interest peaked at each of his classes. He’s just an all-around cool guy.
