I’m not an expert in destination weddings or honeymoon getaways but there’s something that is clear to me…Belize is special…Belize is magical…Belize is perfect for romance.
I have been all over Belize and have worked in the tourism industry for years. Through my experience, I have encountered many couples vacationing in Belize and most of the time they couldn’t stop raving about the country. Time after time, they would say the same thing: how fortunate they were to travel to Belize and choosing an adventure destination for romance was a fun bonding experience.
Here are eight places I recommend for an unforgettable romantic vacation:
Update: I wrote this article in 2012 and for Valentines Day 2017, I decided to update it. To the existing original list, I’ve added two resorts that have blossomed over the past couple years, they are El Secreto of North Ambergris Caye and Ka’ana of Cayo.
The secret is out! El Secreto is one of the more recent resorts in Ambergris Caye and it quickly became one of the most popular; especially since it’ has been featured in many international magazines and many famous people have stayed there. This is a great place for those that are into chic hotels and want privacy and seclusion.
I was serious when I said celebrities love it there: check out my blog post about Whitney Port.
This seaside resort is located in the quaint Garifuna village of Hopkins and has spectacular accommodations mixing rustic chic with elegance. Hamanasi is probably Belize’s most popular dive resort and the only PADI certified 5-star dive resort in Belize. It is ideal for couples who share the passion of spending time underwater and want to explore nearby jungle adventures in Southern Belize. If you prefer to snorkel, an unforgettable tour includes visiting Glovers Reef Atoll where you can see amazing coral formations, turtles, dolphins and numerous colorful fishes.
I personally enjoy all their use of hardwood furnishings, the extra friendliness of their staff, and their treehouses that manifest a jungle feeling while being beachside.
Robert’s Grove Beach Resort
Situated a few minutes away from the quirky village of Placencia, Roberts Grove Beach Resort has been charming couples for years since it is one of Belize’s oldest beach resorts (formally knows as The Inn at Roberts Grove). Even if you don’t stay there, just passing this place during the night time will make anyone stop and admire the wonderful landscaping and beautiful lights. If the entrance garden doesn’t please you enough, just go to the back and take a look at their beach.
Hint: Ask to stay at Ranguana Caye ( a couple miles the coast) if you wish to have a more secluded getaway.
Located 3 miles away from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, this private 4-acre island is the ultimate retreat for couples seeking pampered relaxation, privacy, and world class service. This luxury resort has quickly become a celebrity hotspot hosting TV celebrities and billionaires such as Bill Gates.
What couples rave the most about this place is that the seclusion allows for the perfect ambiance to connect with that special someone.
Ka’ana is a fairly new resort in Cayo but has quickly gained a reputation for hosting VIP clientele. They market themselves as a boutique hotel and promote adventure travel and healthy living. It is near San Ignacio and has easy access to the highway.
I recently visited here and was impressed with how they’ve improved their restaurant and bar – it’s very rustic chic ( Pinterest-able ).
The Lodge at Chaa Creek
For the Eco-conscious traveler, Chaa Creek has been making couples fall further in love with themselves and NATURE for over 30 years. This unique jungle lodge in the Cayo District sits in a nature reserve filled with exotic wildlife and trails which are perfect for exploration. Imagine riding horseback through the rainforest learning about various medicinal plants and later having a picnic at a nearby Maya site – the best thing being that it is all possible on site.
Also well recommended are their Spa treatments for couples; fun fact: Prince Harry stayed here and loved it.
Matachica Beach Resort
Located in North Ambergris Caye, this resort is great for couples seeking access to the lively town of San Pedro but not having much interest of spending excessive time there. At Matachica you can choose between lovely huts on the beach or luxurious villas, all the accommodations are warm, cozy and have unique fixtures.
This is the perfect place if you desire a splendid ambiance and alone time with that special someone after a busy day of exploring, snorkeling or diving.
Victoria House is another jewel of Ambergris Caye which I cannot mention without imagining how perfect it is for a romantic getaway. Located South of San Pedro, this British colonial style resort is an elegant retreat with luxurious accommodations, world-class service, and fine dining. A perfect day would include a deep sea fishing trip, sunset sailing, and a private dinner on the beach to enjoy your catch of the day – nothing compares to seaside romance.
By the way… Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed rekindled their love here.
I hope you enjoyed this list. Please note that all these resorts are not cheap places to stay but I PERSONALLY believe that for a special romantic getaway, luxurious vacations are best – so don’t plan on getting married too many times as it will definitely set you back a little fortune. Haha. JK.
