Not sure how common this is, but while interacting with several travelers who recently visited Belize, I have found myself repeatedly having to explain why Ambergris Caye is still a great place to visit.
The criticism is almost always the same. They feel it has become too expensive and no longer see it as the obvious choice it once was. When compared to other beach destinations in Belize, such as Caye Caulker, they question whether Ambergris Caye is still worth it.
I understand where that reaction comes from. Costs have gone up, noticeably so. At the same time, it is worth being precise about the history here. Ambergris Caye was never really positioned as a budget destination. It has always sat toward the higher end of Belize’s tourism spectrum. What has changed is the gap. Given the island’s popularity, plus pandemic-induced inflation, prices today are meaningfully higher than they were a few years ago, and that shift is felt more sharply by travelers who are price-sensitive or comparing Belize against lower-cost alternatives.
What Ambergris Caye does particularly well within Belize
As time passes, places change. The real question is not whether Ambergris Caye is expensive, but who it is best suited for and what it offers that is distinct within Belize’s tourism landscape.
First, Ambergris Caye benefits from exceptional proximity to the reef. The Belize Barrier Reef sits remarkably close to shore here, often less than a mile offshore. From San Pedro, it is common to reach top snorkel and dive sites within a 10-15 minute boat ride, including the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. For divers, Ambergris Caye also remains one of the main gateways to the Great Blue Hole, Belize’s most famous attraction.
Second, Ambergris Caye continues to dominate on nightlife and dining. No other destination in the country offers the same density of bars, restaurants, and social spaces in one area. If what you want is to go out at night, try different restaurants, move between bars, and feel like something is actually happening after dark, this is still where Belize delivers most consistently.
Third, Ambergris Caye has built a mature accommodation ecosystem that no other part of Belize has matched. The island has the highest concentration of well-established resorts, long-standing local hotels, and internationally affiliated luxury properties in the country. Global brands such as Marriott and Hilton operate alongside extremely popular local hotels that have been serving travelers at a high level for decades. That mix creates consistency and attracts travelers who value reliability and service standards.
Fourth, because Ambergris Caye has been in the tourism business longer than anywhere else in Belize, it has developed a deeper bench of tourism professionals. Hoteliers, managers, tour operators, dive masters, chefs, and frontline staff here often have years, sometimes decades, of experience. That institutional knowledge shows in smoother logistics, clearer standards, and more polished service.
Finally, Ambergris Caye has the largest and most established expat community in Belize, which shapes an environment that some travelers find familiar and comfortable. A long-standing expat presence tends to support certain amenities, service expectations, and a wider range of dining and lifestyle options that feel easy to navigate. Want Texas BBQ? Got it. Want a sports bar showing NFL games? No problem. For travelers who value ease and predictability alongside quality, this familiarity can be a meaningful part of the island’s appeal.
A question of fit, not value
Of course, there are trade-offs, and the very things that make Ambergris Caye appealing to some can be reasons others decide it is not the right fit for them. The key is being honest about what kind of experience you want before deciding where to go. I was reminded of this recently while vacationing at an all inclusive resort in Mexico, where convenience and predictability were the entire point of the experience.
