Belize Gold Standard hotels are designated resorts that have passed a rigorous test for enhanced health and hygiene protocols. It’s part of the mandatory Gold Standard program introduced by the Belize Tourism Board to promote tourism health and safety.

International tourists are recommended to stay at Gold Standard hotels while in Belize. Fortunately, at this point, most places have received Gold Standard designations, including vacation rentals, restaurants, and tour operators. The program has received the #SafeTravels stamp of approval by the World Travel & Tourism Council.

The list of Gold Standard hotels in Belize is very long so here I’ve broken it down to my favourite hotels at the most-visited destinations in Belize.

Some of the nicest beach resorts are in Ambergris Caye. Located near many top Belize Barrier Reef attractions, this island is a popular place for people seeking diving, snorkeling, and fishing tours while enjoying the lively beach town of San Pedro, which is the most popular destination in Belize.

Weezie’s is one of the few nicer condo-style accommodations in Caye Caulker. Its modern rooms have views of the Caribbean Sea and are equipped with many amenities including air conditioning, WiFi, and cable TV. The best thing, however, is the hotel’s short distance from the center of Caye Caulker.

Located on Front Street with lovely views of the beach and the Caribbean Sea, Rainbow Hotel is one of Caye Caulker’s first hotels and it’s possibly the most centrally located Caye Caulker hotel. I’ve stayed here a couple times and I like that it’s no-frills: the hotel is affordable and offers clean and spacious rooms.

The Cayo District serves as the main destination for eco-adventures in Belize. Its main hub, San Ignacio is popular with tourists since it provides easy access to many top jungle attractions while having a restaurant and nightlife scene that is not seen elsewhere on Belize’s mainland. Many of Belize’s top jungle resorts are in Cayo.

The resort is near San Ignacio and has easy access to the George Price Highway.

4. San Ignacio Hotel Resort

San Ignacio Hotel Resort is one of the oldest resorts in Belize. In fact, Queen Elizabeth II stayed there during her 1994 commonwealth visit since it was the only “upscale” hotel in downtown San Ignacio. The hotel has a private 17-acre jungle estate in downtown San Ignacio that is filled with birds, iguanas, and other wildlife.

Just a few miles from San Ignacio, Black Rock Lodge is situated on a beautiful canyon overlooking the rushing Macal River. The resort has cabins facing the water, an open-style restaurant, onsite hiking trails, bird tower, and it’s a great spot for swimming, tubing, or canoeing.

Sweets Songs Lodge, formerly duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge, is one of the original eco lodges in Belize. According to the past owner, Judy duPlooy, the lodge has not changed much since its inception in 1987. The Hummingbird highway is one of the most picturesque areas in Belize and it’s now home to the Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge. The resort is located on 50,000 acres of lush Belizean jungle near Belmopan with stunning grounds and nice views of the Maya Mountains.

This involves: (1) Appointing a “Gold Standard Program Manager” (Program Manager) to implement protocols and ensure compliance; (2) Implementing Monitoring & Reporting – to conduct non-invasive temperature checks and utilize the Tourism Health Information System; (3) Ensuring Social Distancing Protocols for workers and visitors; (4) Implementing Enhanced Cleaning & Sanitization Procedures – to increase disinfection of common areas, face masks, and personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers, visitors, and guests; (5) Developing a Response Plan – to manage Covid-19 suspect cases; (6) Ensuring Clear & Consistent Communication – with employees and guests relating to COVID-19 protocols and their impact; (7) Installing Sanitization Stations – to ensure sufficient access to sanitization across the property; (8) Deploying Technology – for transactions, check-in/out, online ordering, ticketing, etc. to reduce physical interactions; and (9) Implementing a Training Plan – to ensure workers are prepared to manage and implement the new protocols based on their role.
