How to ‘Go Slow’ in Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker's The Split
Reading Time: 5 mins

After exploring most of mainland Belize, starting from the streets of the North that are taco-rich to hiking the peculiar caves in the West, making my way through the dense rainforests that host beautiful hidden waterfalls in the East and meeting generous Mayan people from remote villages in the South, it was time to relax and ‘go slow’ in Caye Caulker.

Needless to say, Belize is popularly known for its Cayes. Caye Caulker, being one of them, is not as crowded as the others, not completely inundated by tourism, and brimming with cozy corners all to yourself and jaw-dropping views of the Caribbean sea and the moonlight. After relaxing there for almost three days, I felt completely rejuvenated, awe-inspired and fallen for Caye Caulker’s charm and naturalness. Here are a few of the top things to do in Caye Caulker to really enjoy your time there!

Go Slow: Top Things To Do In Caye Caulker

1. Peruse the Island on a Golf Cart, it’s their official taxi! You can also rent one.

This Island is so tiny, you could actually cover it on foot. However, if you get tired you will see a lot of golf carts around that are officially Islands taxi. You could either rent or use it to get around. I remember taking one to the Little Kitchen restaurant on the other side of the island for only BZD 5.00.

2. Unwind in the comfy corners of Caye Caulker

Walk by the beach and you are sure to stumble upon some alluring areas with breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. Get yourself a Pina Colada and unwind. My suggestion would be to check out The Island Magic Hotel which offers great drinks at their bar and you can sit in their luxury cabanas.

3. Coffee or Kombucha and Yoga Classes!

Lounge at the artistic Namaste Cafe over a Coffee or Kombucha and take a yoga class upstairs. I absolutely loved their delicious pesto and tomato bagel which served as a perfect breakfast to start your day.

4. Chill at The Split

On the North of the island you’ll find a narrow waterway called the split that divides the island into two. Bask in the clear blue water of Caye Caulker at The Split sipping on a Cuba libre from the Lazy Lizzard bar. You can go parasailing, fishing, or just relax on one of the cabanas and get a suntan!

5. Enjoy the world’s best Barrier Reef

You are in a country that hosts one of the world’s most beautiful barrier reefs, so you cannot miss it. Go snorkeling or diving at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Or how about manatee spotting? If you prefer to do something cheap, rent a kayak and paddle to the edge of the reef. Just remember to not go past it since that can be dangerous.

6. Bike around the Island

For those that like to be active, biking is the best way to truly enjoy the Island. You’ll find bike rentals almost everywhere around you. For just BZD 10 per day, you can rent a cycle and go around. I had the best time exploring the nooks and corners of the island on my bike.

7. Give yourself a different look with the braids!

The seafood is excellent at Wish Willy – it’s a Pescatarian delight. If you are strictly looking for comfort food, why not try the Little Kitchen Restaurant. Garlic Butter Shrimp, Lemon Pepper Fish, Lemon Garlic Lobster, Creole Lobster, and fresh Coconut Snapper Fillet are waiting for you! Located on the west of the Island on Luciano Reyes street, a secluded family restaurant was an absolute find. And when you get tired of seafood delicacies, head over to La Cubana near Playa Ascunsion. They serve amazing Cuban, Belizean and American food.

After eating, it is time for some spicy margaritas at Margarita Mikes. Strawberry or Mango or both? It’s your call! After a good meal, wouldn’t it just be ideal to end the day with a good Movie under the stars? Bondi’s Bar has got you covered!

9. Go dancing!

If you’re uncomfortable being alone at bars, try the Barrier Reef Restaurant – the bonhomous Belizeans will never let you be by yourself! And if you want to shake a leg to reggae music, go to I and I Reggae Bar. In fact, I&I is one of the coolest spots to party since it is the only bar in Caye Caulker that stays open until 2:00 am.

10. Shop local handicrafts!
